How assessment is planned
Assessment may include ear examination and age-appropriate hearing tests. For a patient who can respond reliably to tones, pure tone audiometry (PTA) may help measure hearing thresholds. Tympanometry, speech testing, imaging or specialist referral is selected according to the finding rather than used as a fixed panel for everyone.
Care depends on the cause
Treatable outer- or middle-ear causes may improve with cause-specific care. Permanent inner-ear loss may need communication strategies, hearing aids or implant assessment through an appropriate audiology or referral pathway. No device or procedure restores normal hearing for every person.
Follow-up and realistic expectations
Bring previous hearing reports and a medicine/noise-exposure history if available. Follow-up depends on the cause, severity, communication needs and whether hearing is stable or changing.
