Mixed hearing loss combines a conductive problem in the outer or middle ear with sensorineural loss in the inner ear or hearing nerve. Each component needs separate assessment.
How assessment is planned
Ear examination and audiometry help estimate the conductive and sensorineural components. Tympanometry, speech testing, imaging or referral is selected according to the suspected cause and treatment decision.
Care depends on the cause
Medical or surgical treatment may help a treatable conductive component, but surgery does not reverse the sensorineural component. Hearing aids, assistive communication strategies or implant assessment may be considered according to severity, speech understanding and individual needs.
Follow-up and realistic expectations
Discuss the realistic goal—safer ear, improved sound access or easier communication—before a procedure or device decision. Repeat hearing tests may be needed if hearing changes.
